Most of my attempts at writing for blogs and other publication peter out because I get tied up in an unattainable view of how good it should be before sharing. As a consequence, I have so many unpublished drafts that never see the light of day, simply because it would take a little more work to shape them into something comprehensible.
I'd like to use this gemlog to work through that discomfort and get more of my writing online. So here's my commitment: For 21 days, I will set a timer every day for at least 1 session of uninterrupted writing, and publish the drafts here as they take shape.
That doesn't mean every day's product gets published, but I do expect to publish 2–3 drafts a week.
The topics will be stuff that interests me, stuff I'm working on, stuff I'm learning about, and stuff that I teach. That may include Quaker theology and classical Christian contemplative practice (I am a member of the Religious Society of Friends). It may include practical guidance and prep for tabletop role-playing games: I am a role-playing hobbyist with an active weekly game. It may include reflections on parenting, which is my vocation; or on building websites, which is my avocation. I'm also interested in philosophy, virtue, and entrepreneurship. I might start with some very old drafts already in my hopper.
One of the obstacles I struggle with is that many of the things I want to write about just require dedication and time to think through clearly. Most of the writing I see online is either reduced to bumper-sticker ideology, which I find repellant, or cunning facades motivated by the same, or else sheer epistemic confusion.
Trouble is, shaping something to a higher standard demands facing the discomfort to keep starting through my own confusion, my own insufficient understandings, and my own strident biases.
What I hope is that, I can get back in a habit of writing regularly, and even produce a few drafts that I'm comfortable publishing elsewhere.
I don't expect many or any readers to follow along, but I welcome any thoughts or comments you have. Email me at <gaptooth@sdf.org>.
