playing games on Gemini

I have decided that I should now dedicate a whole post to games on Gemini, because I have found an entire page full of them and I ended up spending a good chunk of my night exploring. Some of the games are titled:

Spider and Web

Lost Pig

Planetfall

Zork I

here is the gemini game page

"Spider and Web" also known as "Tangle" was a cool game because it is interactive fiction, and the whole premise is that your character broke into a high security complex and now you are being questioned and forced to relive the memories by responding to the questions in a variety of ways. This game is kind of all about trial and error, with the info page even stating that you can try out a bunch of different things and you can easily learn from your mistakes.

The game started by having me head down an alley and I slowly had to figure out some basic words to enter in order to complete actions. For example, I could move by typing in north, south, east, or west. Some of the words wouldn't work if there was a wall or a locked door, so I would have to try out new directions and phrases in order to make any progress.

I eventually found myself in the interrogation chair, where I was being questioned and told that I would have to recount what I did. I sometimes got off track and had to figure out how to get back into the storyline, but it was fun getting to try out different words to see where I ended up.

You basically enter this interrogation chamber and have to explain how you broke into a room that you never broke into, and you just kind of have to figure out how to respond to keep the story going. I have never played a game quite like this, so it was really fun and I ended up playing for a while because I was determined to figure out as much of the story as I could.

I basically learned that one way to be successful in this game is by coming up with a story that is plausible to the interrogator, so that he is satisfied. Some yes or no questions would please him, whereas others could make him frustrated or get the story off track. There were also certain words that corresponded to certain parts of the story, so sometimes I would inadvertently jump around and I had a difficult time figuring out how to fix those errors. I just had to keep trying different words or combinations of actions in order to advance the story, but one wrong move could set the whole thing off.

In the end, I guess I never really ended up being successful by reaching a conclusion to the story. I eventually got so far off track that I couldn’t figure out how to fix it. I think that this will get easier as I get more used to the format of this game genre. Most actions in this story would be completed with words that are six letters or less, so I had to get use to guessing short words that could effectively convey an action. There is a guide with some basic words that I used for assistance, so I'm not sure how I got so off track. In any case, it was fun getting to play around and experiment with different sets of actions, so I think that I will keep trying with "Tangle" to see how far I can get.
