Emergency units respond to major incident on Cork city quay as car goes in the River Lee with three inside

Cork city gardai, ambulances and fire services are currently at the scene of a major incident along the quays on Friday evening.

A major search and rescue operation is underway at Kennedy Quay in Cork city.

It is believed a vehicle has gone into the water at the quay.

Witnesses to the horrific incident told Cork Beo they saw a car go into the river.

Witnesses say they saw two passengers free themselves as the car sank in the deep water.

Another passenger is feared to have been trapped inside the car.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed to Cork Beo: "Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances of an incident where a vehicle entered the River Lee at Kennedy Quay, Cork City, at approximately 8:45pm on Friday, 3rd June, 2022.

"Two children were recovered from the water and are currently receiving treatment at Cork University Hospital for non-life threatening injuries."

"An Garda Síochána remain at the scene and are awaiting support from specialist services to conduct further examinations of the vehicle."
