Cork TD says 'we could end homelessness,' as he tells Dail of Leeside's dereliction problem

3 Jun

The disgraceful number of empty and derelict houses in Cork city and county has been raised in the Dail by a Cork TD.

Sinn Finn TD, Thomas Gould found it "unbelievably shocking and heartbreaking" to see the amount of dereliction in Cork in the midst of a decade long housing crisis .

"There are nearly 10,990 properties vacant in Cork alone," said Deputy Gould.

"Imagine what we could do."

Deputy Gould said there's been many buildings on the derelict site register since the day it was set up 32 years ago.

"We could clear the housing crisis and end homelessness if we tackle dereliction and vacancy,"

"There must be will from the government," said Deputy Gould.

The National Homeless and Housing Coalition (NHHC) says that with an estimated 10,000 people homeless in Ireland - and an estimated 182,000 derelict, empty or unused housing units - Ireland is facing a "manufactured crisis" that successive Governments have failed to deal with.

The rental sector has become hugely problematic across Cork and the country.

May's Daft.ie report into housing and rents found that Cork city's average rent is now €1,607 while a place in the county will set you back around €1,258 a month.

That's a 10.2 percent increase in the city and a whopping 10.8 percent in the county compared to the same time the year before. Overall rents have gone up 11.7 percent nationally.
