A trauma-informed perspective that doesn’t sound like “just do it”.
Recognize that the labels of “I’m lazy”, “I am bad at routines” and “I basically suck” do not reflect reality. There is a deeper reason why you’re putting things off.
Procrastination comes from the freeze response and immobility. This is a trauma response that is meant to help us numb pain and survive. Knowing this makes us less judgemental of it.
Apply self compassion: place your hand on that area of your body and breathe into it. If it feels right, say “this is a moment of suffering for me. May I be happy, may I be well, may I live with ease”. It may also help to imagine yourself as a child, or to think of a child or baby animal you love unconditionally as you do this.
Ask the resistance in your body, “what is it that you need right now?” This one can be tricky when we are out of attunement with our bodies, so some options can be: a hug, tea, a delicious meal, rest, cuddles with your partner, or pet.
Take the tiniest step towards your goal (what you’re procrastinating doing). Notice that it should be no more than a level 3 out of 10 (10 being highest fear) in your fear meter. Otherwise, you can become overwhelmed again and go back into complete shutdown and freeze.
Remember that we don’t just do it once and get “rid” of procrastination. The more we can remember that it’s just a coping/protection mechanism that we can honor, the more we grow through resistance!
