This was such a happy surprise. I had been waiting and waiting for the new Sneaker Pimps album. I finally got it once it came out and it was an utter disappointment. Then this album by Martina Topley-Bird randomly appeared. Her having worked on the early Tricky albums (as well as some Massive Attack tracks and other cool collabs), her name was familiar to me... but I couldn't think why. So I listened and was immediately reminded of that time and those albums... but updated and deep and just really solid.
The album has some of that trip-hop sound, but has a lot of smoky jazzy influence and a little bit of reggae influence on a few tracks along with some R&B vibes. The basslines are awesome throughout and the vocals are, as you would expect, gorgeous. I am only on my third listen-through right now so don't have a ton more to say. This review is meant more as a "get this on your radar" notice. Low key, beautiful, dark at times, full of love... good music. Get this one.
