From all parts of the Internet, mostly in English (title between ââ) or French (title between «»). These are websites, capsules, articles, books, periodicals, booklets, video channels, podcasts, etc, that present something in a nice or clever way, are well-sourced or have an effective style, and that in my opinion are worth your time if the subject interests you!
The classification and ordering of links is arbitrary. Most of the time, I place more recent articles or âmeta-articlesâ at the top.
You can also take a look at the logs I follow on the smolnet right here. So many cool online places!
The âCool articles you should readâ list from Beyond Neolithic Life
Lots of good articles from various authors, ported to Gemtext!
âWar and Anarchists: Anti-Authoritarian Perspectives in Ukraineâ (2022)
A summary of political issues within Ukraine, how left-wing groups and individuals try to articulate ideology and practical survival, the confusion around antifascism and the perspectives for anti-authoritarian groups. The article links to other pieces from both Ukrainian and Russian anarchists.
If war breaks out, we do not Know if the anti-authoritarian movement will survive, but we will try to do so. In the meantime, this text is an attempt to leave the experience that we have accumulated online.
Mediapart, journal d'information francophone
I really recommend Le Monde Diplomatique, a monthly newspaper, in French but with an English translation.
Le Monde Diplomatique (French edition)
Le Monde Diplomatique (English edition)
Terrorism and Counterterrorism, a MOOC by Universitet Leiden (Netherlands)
I attended this course a long time ago and it has been eye opening in many aspects.
âHow a crippling shortage of analysts let the London Bridge attackers throughâ (2017)
How automated and pervasive surveillance is pretty much useless against terrorism.
Itâs people, not computers, who can identify terrorists before they strike.
LOWâTECH MAGAZINE (solar-powered website)
(always-online version in case the weather is bad)
Interesting magazine on anything low-tech and sustainable. I like that they often put the effort to imagine how inventions or reinventions would fit in society at large and not just in the workshop of enthusiasts.
A free collection of videos teaching how to harvest seeds from a variety of flowers and fruits, and storing them for reusage in the next years.
ChaĂźnes Youtube francophones :
Permaculture, agroécologie, etc
Les Sourciers, vidéos sur l'hydroponie
Advice for weather reading by looking at the sky, with awesome ASCII art!
âVaccines: A Measured Responseâ (2021)
Engaging documentary on the roots of the scare against vaccines, focuses mostly on Wakefield's MMR scare and his buddy Fudenberg, bridging at the end with COVID-19.
« Antivax - Les marchands de doute » (2021)
Similaire au documentaire de hbomberguy ci-dessus mais en français, donc pour la famille ou les copain·e·s récalcitrant·e·s.
As an absolute beginner, I suggest using only traditional media such as cheap pencil and paper, spending some time with black and white, understand some common pitfalls like symbol drawing.
âKeys to drawingâ by Bert Dodson teaches you technical basics another way.
As a beginner, these are some of the books I've enjoyed. Of course at this point and for the rest of your artistic life, the most important thing to do will not be to read books but drawing everyday.
Online classes:
NMA (New Masters Academy) for traditional medium classes
CGMA (CG Masters Academy) for digital painting classes
Ctrl+Paint, a library of free videos about drawing with Photoshop
Youtube channels:
Alphonso Dunn provides a lot of interesting advice about drawing with pen & ink.
Cool places for references:
Atlas des régions naturelles, photos of France
Spomenik DB, photos of the Balkans
Line of Action, figure drawing practice tool
CroquisCafe, a Youtube channel for daily figure drawing
âThe web browser I'm dreaming ofâ (2021)
Expected features? Six items. Undesired features? Let's see!
An easy history of CSS.
â24/192 music downloads and why they make no senseâ (2012)
Audiophiles are wasteful.
« Yuka contre Open Food Facts ou le match retour de Britannica contre Wikipedia ? » (2019)
Un peu saoulé de voir des gens utiliser Yuka au lieu d'Open Food Facts, surtout aprÚs la lecture de cet article.
You probably already know Hacker News, but do you know this TL;DR? (looks like they stopped posting though).
Antenna, a neat aggregator for user-submitted feeds
Exploration Surprise! Three random capsule per day!
A fantastic aggregator for all the failures in the crypto/nft/defi world.
âThe Future Is Not Only Useless, Itâs Expensiveâ (2021)
Probably the article resonating the most with how I feel about the latest blockchain grotesque invention.
As the visual manifestation of cryptocurrency, NFT art combines the nuanced social awareness of computer programmers with the soulful whimsy of hedge fund managers.
âPlay-to-earnâ and Bullshit Jobs (2021)
In spite of being presented as the future of work by some venture capitalists, the incentives just donât make sense. Floors donât have to be swept in the metaverse unless theyâre designed to need sweeping.
âLine Goes Up - The Problem With NFTsâ (2022)
A 2h-long video squeezing a lot of financial system issues, from the 2008 crisis to NFT issues, picturing how the latter does nothing to prevent the former from happening again.
Crypto currency does nothing to address 99% of the problems with the banking industry because those problems are patterns of human behavior. Theyâre incentives, theyâre social structures, theyâre modalities. The problem is what people are doing to others, not that the building theyâre doing it in has the word âbankâ on the outside.
âThis isn't Spartaâ (2019)
An historical presentation of the Spartan society that attempts to balance against the fantasized vision depicted in pop culture (i.e. the movie 300.
Yes this is quite empty around here. Do you know cool stuff I should read? Please let me know!
« Architecture et anarchie, un couple mal assorti »
« Squatter ou sauver ? Il faut choisir ; comment le libéralisme infiltre les squats anarchistes »
