Note Consolidation and PDA Upgrades

2022-05-06

---

I use a local Zim wiki to store many of my personal documents. Before then, I used flat text files with a homegrown directory structure, and prior to that I used Joplin. While I've tried to consolidate everything into Zim in recent months, I've still had a few notes lingering in other places. I finally got all of them moved to Zim yesterday, allowing me to remove two Syncthing directories in the process.

My motivation for using Zim is its portability. I've mentioned elsewhere that universal access is very important to me: I want my notes to be easily manageable using nothing but a generic text editor, while being standardized enough to allow dedicated programs to parse them and implement robust features inside them. Zim is the most feature-rich system I've found that gives me this flexibility.

Meanwhile, I've pulled my Gemini PDA out of my desk drawer once again. The device is primarily designed to run Android, but Planet Computers also ported Debian Buster to it, which is what I run. Buster, being an older version of Debian, is beginning to show some problems: several websites no longer load correctly in Chromium, and I haven't received any security updates for the OS in over a year.

A few guides exist to upgrade the Gemini PDA to Debian Stretch. I should probably do so if I'm going to use the PDA in any serious capacity. Debian Bullseye has not been ported to the device, and given its age and niche market, I would be surprised if any effort was made to port Bullseye in the future.
