Wonder Egg Priority: A Seasonal Review

Where do I even begin with this one? Wonder Egg Priority is a currently airing 2021 seasonal anime. It is a "magical girl" type show, in the sense that 4 friends meet each-other and stop monsters together in almost Madoka Magica style worlds. The key difference here is that there is almost this looming sense of reality with WEP (Wonder Egg Priority). WEP goes out of its way to remind the viewer that even in a world where the impossible becomes possible, human nature can still make anything take a massive turn.

The story starts out with our main character, Ai Ohto. Ohto-chan, as she prefers to be addressed, is a hikikomori, hiding from society after a bad experience in public school. One way or another she somehow ends up finding out about some strange eggs, called wonder eggs, which can affect her dreams. Through this experience, she meets a group of unlikely friends: Neiru, Rika, and Momoe, each with their own reasons for fighting monsters in their dreams. Who knows what will happen when they accomplish their task of stopping enough of these monsters? The story sets itself up in a way that leaves the viewer without any understanding as to why everything is happening, as they gradually piece things together over the first 2 episodes.

Aside from the main plot of the story, WEP also branches out a bit and explores more real topics, ranging from things like teenage angst and contrarianism to parenting and childhood trauma. Initially from the artwork of 4 happy girls smiling and dancing with each-other, I expected some slice-of-life moe type show, but boy was I wrong. WEP has some pretty serious moments, including the revelations of why each girl decided to become a magical girl and fight with the wonder eggs. This has kept me absolutely hooked, I am rarely the type to watch seasonal shows as they are still airing.

Overall, I would say that Wonder Egg Priority is a must watch this season. From its unique and almost 90s style animation, to its dark and sometimes thought-provoking story, I feel there is a little something here for everyone.
