Cork and Dublin are the two Irish cities amongst 100 across the European Union to be chosen as 'NetZeroCities' - leading the way for large urban areas to be climate neutral by 2030.
Cork City Council has driven our application to be amongst the cities that will take on the challenge, which has been described as an 'enormous commitment' to combatting climate change.
And it will be about more than combatting climate change - the Smart Cities part of the challenge will see the 100 cities drive for cleaner, smarter, more people-friendly urban spaces with sustainable transport networks. Cork will also aim to be a hub for experimentation and innovation in sustainable energy, transport and more.
The EU says the 100 cities - chosen from almost 400 applicants across 27 member states - will get 'World-class practitioners to provide expertise in many different fields such as democratic governance, social innovation, citizen engagement, and capital and financial structuring to address all aspects of the systemic change needed for climate neutrality."
"Services to cities will comprise tailored, in-person support and a dedicated online platform that brings together new and existing tools and resources to help them in their net-zero journey."
It means a lot of targets and a lot of international expertise and support devoted to transforming Cork City.
Today's announcement has been welcommed by a range of groups accross Cork, including the Green Party.
The next steps will see Cork - and it's fellow 100 NetZeroCities across the EU begin the journey towards a more sustainable future.
