The new, 40km Macroom to Dunmanway high-power electricity line has now gone fully operational - and the opening will see some 36 local community groups benefit from grants.
Eirgrid has set aside €600,000 to benefit community projects along the line from Clashavoon, northeast of Macroom to the outskirts of Dunmanway.
These include the Macroom Meals on Wheels service - which has been able to buy an electric vehicle - and Rusheen National School, where the children have been given new iPads.
The 100kv overhead line is designed to revolve major transmission network problems in South West Cork.
At present, only two 110 kV transmission lines maintain the electricity supply in South West Cork. These are the Dunmanway-Macroom 110 kV line and the Bandon-Raffeen 110 kV line.
Before this new line opened - if one was done for regular maintenance and the other suffered a fault - many thousands of homes and businesses across the region could lose their power.
Eirgrid says the new project will also allow new sources of renewable energy - solar, wind, wave and tidal - to connect to the grid. The EU has set Ireland the target of generating 40 percent of our national power needs through renewable sources this year and Ireland is aiming for energy independence in the coming decade.
