Sleazy Joeys

The character Joey Tribbiani in the TV show 'Friends' was portrayed as being almost irrisistabe to women. His usual approach would be to sleazily look a woman up and down while nodding slowly, saying "How you doin'?" in a deep masculine voice.

I personally know at least two women who have complained about being approached this way. Apparently it used to happen quite a lot, and was annoying or embarrassing at best. These experiences were told to me with a tone of derision - the approach clearly didn't work.

What the fuck were they thinking?!

What would possess these men to act this way? Did they see themselves as handsome Matt LeBlancs, with personal scriptwriters, a lighting crew, and a wardrobe department? Did they think a producer would sit at God's editing desk to show them in their best light? Did they think that these real-life women would be flattered by their sleazy advances, like those mute extras on Friends, with their exaggerated smiles and weak knees?

They probably weren't even genuinely sleazy guys, just somewhat confused and deluded. There's a hint of irony in that, had they just said sincerely "Hi. I find you very attractive. I'd like to get to know you. Can we chat?" they'd have stood a much higher chance of success. I don't think I've ever met a woman who would value sleaziness over sincerity and honesty.

I wonder if they still cringe?
