Checking In (2022-01-31)

It's the end of the month so I figure now might be a good time to write about all the little things that have been going on and have been on my mind.

I made the tough choice to withdraw from my operating systems design course

It's a bit disappointing because I really did find it fun. The trouble is that I'm taking 14 credit hours of just CS classes, which might not sound like a lot but all the projects are a bit much to keep track of and plan time for. Other students might be able to relate. Withdrawing won't be a big deal since the course is also offered during the spring term. I wasn't yet planning on taking anything else during that time, so I thought it'd be smart to spread out my load.

I'm already feeling it's a good move. I've had a lot more time to put into other important projects, and even though I'm only one class lighter I'm amazed at how much less stressed I feel.

Seriously. What a difference.

Plus I bet taking that operating systems design class by itself will make it a lot more enjoyable than it already has been. Wins all around.

With the lightened load I've also felt unstressed enough to check out new games

Well, new to me at least.

The first is A Short Hike. It's a colorful, lighthearted, retro-style 3D-platformer about a young bird exploring an island and climbing its mountain. Along the way you meet lots of fun characters and get treated to a fantastic dynamic soundtrack. It's not particularly challenging but if you like exploration and relaxing experiences, this one gets a strong recommendation from me.

The second game couldn't be any more different from the first. I picked up Project Zomboid after getting hooked on watching someone else play it, and I'm glad I did. It's an isometric zombie survival game that's been in active development since 2013 and boy, does it show. It goes so much more in depth than any other game in the genre that I know of. It's so complex that I think it paradoxically makes it easy to learn -- everything in the game world just works as you'd expect so you don't spend much time thinking about the mechanics of the game but rather the situation you're in. It would take more time to explain than I've got right now... maybe I'll write a more in-depth review once I get some more time with it? Needless to say, I'm hooked and completely immersed.

I'm happy to see more and more new capsules cropping up on gemini

It reminds me of discovering gemini myself and starting this capsule. That'll have been a year ago pretty soon! Time flies. Gemini has come a long way even since then. Popular capsules today like Antenna and Station weren't yet around, and the activity they were getting even just several months ago feels like it pales in comparison to today's.

There's always something interesting to find on these new capsules. Like just the other day I was reading Charick's post on RuneScape and private servers. I had no idea private servers were a thing, and it's amazing to run into someone that cares so much about the preservation of a game that young me absolutely loved.

But never be afraid to write something just because you think other people won't find it interesting (you're probably wrong), or that it's not as impressive as what other people are doing. Write for the fun of it. If you ever run out of ideas, I know I enjoy doing these journal-style posts where I ramble about everything and nothing in particular. And I enjoy reading the same from others too!

Speaking of rambling, I'd better call it here.
