My son is at an age where his learning at home for school often involves practicing writing, with some kind of writing prompt to kick things off. I'm at a loss sometimes for what to write here, so thought hmmm... what if I get a list of children's writing prompts, and use them? Found a list of 52, and I'll work through them in no particular order, so here we go!
Look out of your window. What do you see?
I'm in the home office and guest room, which has a single window looking out to the side of our house. A grey weathered cedar fence separating the front and back yards butts up against the external brick wall of the house right next to the window. There's about 20 feet of ground between us and the neighbor's yard, which begins with a piece of chain link fence that has become overgrown with some climbing weeds.
It's probably the least interesting view from our house... so why did I choose to do this prompt first, while I'm sat here? Hmmmm. Maybe just thinking about looking out of a window conjours up a nice image of peering out on some rolling green countryside, or a rugged coastline. Not so much the side yard in suburbia!
The grass is patchy outside of the window, more dirt than grass at the moment. This house is 5 years old, so a new build that received builder grade bermudagrass sod all around. The neighborhood is older, mostly 1950s houses with many big shade trees planted back then. Our house is built on a plot where the previous house burnt down, but the trees survived. They block the sun from hitting the grass outside of this window for most of the day. The sun loving bermudagrass has all died out, leaving some bare dirt that is gradually being colonized by the creeping St Augustine from next door that can tolerate the shade. I'd guess in another year it'll have filled in completely. Until then I'll keep putting down some cold season ryegrass seed each autumn, so the heavy spring rain doesn't wash away all the soil. I guess I need to do that soon!
Well, that's about it outside of this window. If only I'd been in the front of the house I could have written about the trees, flowers, Armenian church, rail line... Lesson learned!
