What are people using Matrix for? (updated: lost interest)

I've been hearing about Matrix occasionally and I'm very interested in what folks are doing with it.

I'm excited to learn about what folks are actually doing with it, so I'm hoping to take some time this weekend and do some exploring. One thing I'd like to try and set up is a bridge between Matrix and my Signal account. A decentralized, user-hosted messaging platform sounds very intriguing.

My fear is that I'll be disappointed to find out that it's just IRC with extra steps.

I'll write here once I've had a chance to learn more.

I apologize for not following up on this like I said I would.

Unfortunately my job has been quite intense this month and I quickly lost interest in this topic.
