Swale

SWALE
Swale, n. Etym: [Cf. Icel. svalr cool, svala to cool.]

Defn: A valley or low place; a tract of low, and usually wet, land; a
moor; a fen. [Prov. Eng. & Local, U.S.]

Came across this word in an article by Kathy Reshetiloff in the January-February 2022 Bay Journal about the Chesapeake region's distinctive natural sights during winter.

The absence of foliage reveals otherwise invisible patterns - complex branch structures in trees and shrubs, or graceful slopes and swales that you'll never see in the summer.
