Turns and Twists in Life

As circumstance has it I'm now sitting in a one bedroom flat some three hundred metres away from the house where the rest of my family still lives. It's a long story, but suffice to say that both my wife and I believe it's the best for now.

I was always planning on moving my server to this new location as well, but I wasn't in a hurry. There's lots of other things that need to be done in the flat, after all, and it sat well enough in the house. Until two days ago, that is, because the fiber converter in the house suddenly went belly up for no apparent reason.

I had just bought a router for the flat, so at least I had internet here. Yesterday I called up the ISP (which is a co-op, by the way) and asked for a static IP (it's already public), then moved the server here, configured my router to use said IP, set up a DHCP reservation for the server, and set up port forwarding. There were a couple of other issues related to the sudden reboot of the system, but I fixed the last of it this morning.

Wow. What a day.

I also bought some shelves, a dinner table and two chairs, brought another shelf over from the house (will probably take the TV and sofa from the house too, because my wife wants to buy bigger versions of those anyway), bought some big rugged mats to put in my entry hallway, brought some toys over from the house so that the kids will have something to do while here, played beach volley ball with some friends... As I said, what a day.

This is my life right now. There's still a lot to do in the flat before everything is the way I want it. Some of it harder than other things:

Attention: Server Downtime Planned

I have some electrical work to do, and the fuse I need to pull to do it safely also happens to power the converter, router, and server. Expect Antenna, this blog, and Garden Gnome Society to be down for a couple of hours some time in the next few days. I can't give a specific time, because I honestly don't know when I can do it.

I always dreaded having to spend time and energy fixing things up around my dwelling. This is kind of fun, though. I suppose one difference is that I can do it to my own taste, although the biggest difference is that I have an abundance of time and little else to do apart from programming and movies.

This is not what I wanted my life to look like by a long stretch. It is, however, how it is. And I'm making do and trying to make the best of it. Honestly it's not that bad.
