[2022-04-25]..macOS.10.yr.later..gmi

Hello stranger,

Been a long time since my last post. I hope you're coping with everything going on in our world and that browsing gemini keep you sane. So this would be my first post without the usual textwidth=72 since I've been told some time ago to stop doing that and let the gemini client render the page properly.

So let's get to it! macOS will be the topic of the day.

Along the way of my Unix-like journey I ended up using MacOSX years ago as I got myself a powerbook g4 12 [0]

It was running 10.3 "Panther" and it was OK for my use at that point in time. Then over the years I got one of this alu mbp and eventually a retina display running 10.6 "Snow Leopard". Long story short, I ended up being so frustrated with both the hardware and the OS functionalities that I gave it up. (Yeah the monitor was good but everything else was pissing me off starting with the price, was just not worth it)

Now, 10 years later, guess what my company gave me as a replacement of my Dell work laptop?

One of this new macbook pro M1-pro 14".

So, for what it's worth, here's some personal comments and feedback.

First, hum, the hardware, the chassis looks very similar to the old mbp, there's all the right ports, that's good they have stopped with their non-sense of single ports.Second, a decent keyboard, and thanks god they went away from that non-sense of touchbar crap.

Now, macOS, well... expect the darktheme it really looks like nothing has changed... I could naturally feel like this could be a good thing. But I also feel like it feels a little empty.

Now, using it, it's fast, of course, can't really compare with my thinkpad x1c gen3.... so everything feels quick. It will just do the job for work but it doesn't get me over excited.

What does, is to see OpenBSD already support it ! [1]

Count on me to give this a go in a couple of weeks and reports back on the experience.

So yeah hardware wise it feels OK but the overall is still a little boring. Won't replace my x1c openbsd which will remain my daily driver for personal use.
