narcissism |'närsəˌsizəm|
noun
Excessive or erotic interest in oneself and one's physical appearance.
Psychology extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one's own talents and a craving for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.
I think narcissism is becoming more prevalent everyday in our society. From the general entitlement attitude that many people have, to the social networking websites like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, society is further degenerating itself in new technological ways. The biggest enablers being Facebook and Twitter which allow people to post their thoughts and deeds online for everyone to see. I like to refer to Facebook as Bragbook because most Facebook users are in one way or another bragging on themselves. They want everyone to know what they're doing at any given moment and then comment on it. The same holds true for Twitter.
I don't know where this all started at, but the narcissistic entitlement that a lot of people have is spreading like wildfire. It seems to have been gaining steam prior to the online social network sites, but given a huge boost upon their arrival. So many people think that they're owed something, that they have the right to anything they want without actually working for it or earning it. It is very noticeable in the workplace where employees expect and demand unearned time off and when they don't get it, they complain to their boss or their union if they have one.
Greed is a driving force for a lot of entitlement attitudes. The love of money drives many to push for more, never being satisfied.
The narcissistic behavior of many people intrigues me. Why are they like this so much? Why do they feel the need to be seen, heard and looked at on a continual basis? Are they so extroverted that they cannot see past their own selves? Even introverts can be painfully narcissistic and are often diagnosed that way. They sometimes spend far too much time alone and when they get out amongst the people, they tend to tell everyone around them all about themselves and never inquiring or commenting on others or other things. Why do these narcissist's have to show off? Are they incapable of being content and allowing others to comment first on them.
This is an era of people's rights, humanism. Everybody has rights and they're entitled to them. The problem really presents itself when people see something they want and are unable to attain it so they claim entitlement and their rights as a means to get what they cannot have. If challenged on it, they run to the press or authority's or lawyers and seek litigation or humiliation of the challenging party in order to back up their claim of entitlement.
I am of a traditionalist mindset in that I work for what I earn and do not expect nor demand to be given anything. I don't want a lot of attention drawn to myself for any reason. Any praises I get are from the lips of others as I try not to boast of myself. No one likes a person who is always bragging about themselves and telling you unsolicited stories of themselves.
