The old fisherman leaned upon his smoking pipe, drawing deep of its volumous smoke. His words trembled and crakled with the weight of a weary truth.
"The tide is turning," He said.
"One day it may turn again but for now...This is the wave, this is the wake."
I knew as sure as I could hear my own heart he was right. But what use was that to me? I am no fisherman, no trawler of the sea.
"Heed," He said.
"The ocean may be fickle but men are fickler still. Not much time attall t' make a difference."
That fisherman was wiser than I ever knew. A shame they stole him away before the ocean had its chance.
I stood my toes in the sand kissing a tide of red and wondering:
"Where had we all gone wrong? Where had we been lead astray?"
The fault was my own. I had not heeded the fisherman's word.
