I have finally done it! I have moved my site to Gemini!
The odds of someone reading this is pretty much nil, but also the odds of knowing what Gemini is as well, essentially impossible.
Gemini is a application level protocol that was inspired by Gopher. The document format is fairly similar to Markdown,
Great you say, but why you ask would I do this?
Lets face it, the modern web is shit. It is anti-user and mostly there to extract time, money and attention from you. Gemini is so basic, I don't think it will ever catch on in the mainstream.
I absolutely love simple file formats, and Gemtext is fantastic, it's a line by line format and you can determine what the line is simply based on the first few characters.
I initially used md2gemini[1] to convert all my markdown files to gemtext, which did an alright job, but at some point I need to go through them all and fix up and issues. I also have a HTTP to Gemini proxy running so that the site is available over HTTPS
I quickly modified the python script that generated a few index pages to create the home page of this site and I will modify it further to re-add pages etc to make the site whole again.
I dunno, but I like simplicity and dislike a lot of the modern web. So yeah...
Also, I am contemplating moving my PIM system over to Gemini rather than markdown as it will be easier to view, currently I have a step where I render out the markdown to html to view over the network or in a browser and Gemtext would cut out a middle man and keep things simple!
