RSS->Email Aggregator (Also a Lizard)

Posted on Friday September 3, 2021

Lately I've been trying to find less-than-toxic methods of keeping up with current events. My prior dependence on Twitter and Reddit was deteriorating my mental health, so I abandoned them a couple of months ago.

Having gotten interested in open-source software over the last decade, I've found myself enjoying the simplicity of mailing list digests. Enough mundane emails find their way into my inbox on a daily basis that seeing such notifications doesn't trigger any kind of a stress response in me; I just get around to them when I feel like it. I get to read interesting, thoughtful correspondence written by fellows with whom I share interests. This low-pressure, minimally-invasive sort of social media respects my boundaries while simultaneously connecting me with people and subjects I care about.

As a means of staying up-to-date on current events while maintaining the respectful distance of mailing list digests, I thought it would be a rewarding side-project to build a RSS-to-email feed aggregator.

You can find the source code + documentation here.

This was also an opportunity to learn to use a couple of C libraries I'd never directly utilized, namely libcurl and libXML2.

It was a fun project to work on, and I enjoy getting emails generated by it each morning. It feels good to be able to say I've finished a project, more or less.

Here's an example of what the resulting digests look like:
