Heat Wave Trouble

Posted on Thursday June 17, 2021

Today is mine and my partner's anniversary, and so we had been planning for more than a month to spend the latter half of this week camping.

Yesterday we got all packed up, purchased some new footwear and sun-hats, and made the drive an hour out of town to the lake where we'd planned on staying.

Unfortunately though a heat wave crept up onto us, with temps upwards of 109F. Naturally our campsite had no shade to speak of, and the path to the lake, while accessible, was a somewhat arduous scramble down some steep rocky embankments. About the time that we both started to feel delirious from heat exhaustion, we decided to abandon the whole plan. We went for a short drive and let the AC blast us back to a reasonable body temperature, then packed up our things and GTFO'd.

I should have taken it as a bad sign that the campground was completely empty, save for some families in RVs. No other tent camps in sight.

On the way back home, we came across this small resort general store in the foothills that sold concessions for surprsingly low prices. I paid $1.50 for a scoop of mango ice cream and a dollar each for bottles of cold water. Around here, prices like that are unheard of. Bottled water is easily $2.50 in most stores. Anyway, that was a pleasant surprise and helped us further recover from the heat.

We've been getting plenty of rest since returning home yesterday evening. I think we're going to get Thai food later.
