PETITION in New York on Friday Jul 9, 2021

Washington Square Park, Washington Square

12pm - 12pm EDT

Contact(s): Sunrise Movement (team (at) sunrisemovement (point) org)

Demand that NYU stop investing in fossil fuels!

[Read our Full [URL removed]

New York University’s investments in the **fossil fuel industry** are unethical, directly harmful to its student body, and contrary to the values of the University. By investing in this industry, New York University is directly contributing to the climate catastrophe and perpetuating the systems of oppression against marginalized people and people of color, including many members of the NYU community. We demand that the University:

1. Immediately and permanently freeze any new investments in the 200 largest publicly traded fossil fuel companies.

2. Fully divest from any direct ownership of the 200 largest publicly traded fossil fuel companies and any commingled funds that include public equities and corporate bonds within five years.

3. Commit to transparency about the University’s endowment, and create a Responsible Investments Committee that includes undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty for the purpose of guiding the University’s future investments.

Note that the original “NYU Divest Now!” petition published in Fall of 2021 included a demand for private prison divestment. Per the SGA Town Hall with President Andrew Hamilton on November 17th, 2021, NYU does not have any investments in the private prison industry. Part of our demands includes increased transparency about the University’s endowment, which could prevent gaps of information like this in the future.
