Screenshots of setting up newsgroups in Thunderbird (Version 100, beta as of 2022-04)
Install/open Thunderbird
When it's the first time you start Thunderbird, it greets you with a form to setup your existing email account. For Usenet news this step is actually not needed. You might close that dialog/tab.
Close the dialag: Set Up Your Existing Email Address
Instead we chose to set up Newsgroups.
Create a Usenet identity entering your personal details.
Posting to Usenet can also be done via a pseudonym and an obviously invalid email address, that should then not be by chance a valid addresse, thus it's common to use .invalid as TLD.
Enter a Usenet server address, e. g. nntp.aioe.org as this server does not need an account creation upfront, cf. https://news.aioe.org
Changing server settings to use SSL
All set, but no newsgroups yet
Search for newsgroups to subscribe to, e. g. aioe.test
Subscribe to comp.infosystems.gemini
Download all or only the most recent posts
All set, browse the list of subscribed newsgroups
Enter a newsgroup and browse along the posts for reading
Post a test message in the subscribed test group, or dive right into the Gemini group.
Cheers
