I've been struggling lately with the amount of devices I have that just don't have MIDI out or thru ports. I'm all in favor of the removal of racially insensitive slavery-based terms from MIDI, but when we're finished with that can someone just create a standard that requires an Out port?
I have a MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru to mitigate this, and it's a fantastic little device. It's powered by the MIDI cable itself so there's no need for a plug, and apparently you can chain quite a few before you run into either delays or power issues. So, I suppose I'll just be picking up a second one.
Easiest would be to grab an old 8-in/8-out rackmount MIDI patchbay, but apparently these are still useful items because I could grab at least two of the compact and advanced MIDI Solutions boxes for the same price as an old-as-dirt patchbay on Reverb or eBay. At some point I think I'd like to move to that just for the sake of cleanliness, but working in a shed I'm pretty conscious of power, and the Quadra Thru is a great way to minimize the power needs.
I wouldn't consider this an endorsement per se. But they really make some cool little devices that are, on one hand, utilities, but on the other hand allow for new setups and creative ways of doing things.
