Meatgrinder

I joined a company eight months ago, leading an engineering team of around ten software engineers (zzz). Inherited a heavy roadmap.

Two projects in and completed, the most recent being quite bruising. My boss, the CEO (and part owner) pulls me over and we get talking about the state of play. Usual themes; too much work, not enough people, morale dipping, deadlines too tight, etc.

Much to my surprise he says "I don't want to be CEO of a company that puts people through a meatgrinder and burns them out. Let's rework the roadmap". Jaw dropping moment.

Have reworked the roadmap for 2021 and split the work out until end of 2022 - two years to do our original plan of one years work. Product company, impact to predicted bottom line ~25%. Going to the company Board next week to try to get it signed off. Think it'll fly?
