Ever since I first heard about the NFT phenomena I've been trying to wrack my head around what the point is exactly?
It turns out the uploaders behind the the old "charlie bit my finger" viral youtube video from 2007(who have been milking as much as possible from the viral success of the video for the past 14 years) are selling the video as an NFT and will be deleting the original video from Youtube.
So whoever the rich asshole is who ends up paying an ungodly amount of money for this NFT will then "own" the video.
But... no?
This is a viral video thats been circulating around the internet since 2007, there are copies of it everywhere, even Osama bin Laden had a copy of it.

I've seen people explain this by saying that the NFT is the "Original" and everything else is just a "copy". This makes no sense to me, how is an NFT version of a video that predates the existence of NTFs by over a decade suddenly now the "original", why would it be necessary to delete the original 14 year old youtube upload?
It's a weird attempt to make infinitely replicatable digital files artificially finite.
Another old Youtube sensation "The Annoying Orange" tried to capitalise off NFTs in a similar way, releasing a remastered version of their original viral video as a one-of-a-kind NFT.
This hilariously crashed and burned when people found they could fetch the video file by digging into the HTML of the auction page and this "exclusive" video has now been spread everywhere.

I dunno this shit is weird.
