Hello all! Alex here, admin of flounder.online.
I'm very excited about the loose collection of ideas surrounding the
"small web" -- platforms centered around independence and community --
an alternative to the web as it exists today, dominated by large
corporations and the profit interest. The small web is about community,
about finding alternative spaces to the "big web".
In my view, there are not many good platforms for long-form discussion
on the small web. I think that mailing lists are the best answer to
this, but a lot of mailing list software is archaic and hard to use. I'm
working on a suite of tools to help make running mailing lists easier,
starting with crabmail (the tool you are viewing this email through).
The Crabmail mailing list is available here, if you have any feedback or
discussion:
https://lists.flounder.online/crabmail/
To participate, simply send an email to
smallweb@flounder.online
Or click the "reply" button below this email, which should open your
email client.
Right now the mailing list is _read-only_ -- you'll have to check back
for replies. Atom syndication is coming very soon. This is a new
community and new tool, so expect a bit of instability. Experiment with
it!

This is awesome! Also looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
Just a note: I'm noticing that the Atom feed only shows the title of posts- not the content.

I haven’t decided on the structure for the atom posts. Right now, there is just an RSS feed for “most recently updated threads” and then separate feeds for each thread. Maybe there should be an atom feed for all emails, unstructured? Unsure 🤔

Hey, I have decided to join in to the fun, I noticed you have an 72 character limit, which is fine, but its kind of weird if you email character limit is 80, so yeah, the line-breaks here look pretty bad.
Its a matter of CSS tho, so a quick fix should be possible? Anyways, I am going to stick around for a while, this looks awesome nonetheless :P

I believe the character limit on desktop should be 78 characters (per
the RFC), it is for me. I do agree that this causes problems sometimes,
I will widen it a bit. Thanks!

I played around with this a bit -- I now support format=flowed, so text should flow normally, regardless of how the email is truncated, so long as the client supports format=flowed
