2022/0306/1700 — mud munching

I'm still feeling the after effects of an evening of fridge relocation, so today's outdoor activities were subdued, slow, and a little awkward. In the late afternoon I went out for a walk around the suburb to try and stretch things out and feel a little less stiff

Cool and grey and windy, I really hadn't seen much wildlife of note, a distinctly dead but curious beetle alongside the footpath on Warrigal road, around Christmas beetle size but plain brown with a little rhinoceros like horn. Maybe I'll hunt around and see if I can identify it later...

Passing through the Oakleigh Pioneer Cemetery there were half a dozen cockatoos covered in mud, digging up the bulbs and roots of the wildflowers to eat. Surprisingly quiet compared to the noise they usually make, at first I thought they were Sulphur-crested cockies then realised they were Corellas ... but which one? I know there's two types, but I can never tell them apart. White cockatoo, some bare blue skin around their eyes and a surprising amount of pink on the face and chest, they're really quite attractive, even if they are incredibly noisy and destructive. Long-billed corellas[1] it is. I sat on an old gravestone and watched for a while, suspiciously they watched me back, gradually moving further away, then a pokemon-playing mother and son walked past and they all flew away
