I've pulled together some of the HTTP logs to try and get a better idea of what is happening as I see a lot of strange things from what I can see stats on vs what my server is having to handle (and waste my bandwidth while doing it).
There is one connection - AmazonAWS - the actual trash heap of the internet, it's all shitty bots trying to harvest information and equally most of my email SPAM comes from AWS servers.
Earlier today I got a list of all of the IP ranges for AWS (and there are loads) which have now been blocked on the webserver, the next thing is to get the blocked at other levels.
