2022/0330/1630 — southerly blowing

An afternoon ride down south around the empty wasteland — part rehabilitated old landfill, part fenced-off paddocks — then around and back up to Karkarook lake and a lap of the lake paths. Thick grey clouds building overhead and a noticeable southerly blowing in my face. That combined with the mid-afternoon timing had almost all the birds off in their roosts, hiding from view. I could hear a few Rainbow lorikeets[1] and Noisy miners[2] calling from the trees, but couldn't see them. Around the lake shore large flocks of seagulls[3] continuously flew up, around, and settled again, and two or three Swamphens[4] stalked about, their near-full-sized fuzzy offspring looking a bit like ungainly fuzzy footballs. All the rest of the ducks, waterbirds, finches and doves that I normally see near the lake and surrounds were all in hiding
