Serendipity is one of the most beautiful things about existing. It's eternally magical how the most familiar paths might still lead to the most unexpected destinations. As someone with an interest in typography, I'm subscribed to a couple of newsletters on type design. They arrive weekly and are definitely one of the highlights of the week, always delighting me with not just their main content on typography but also the content they end up highlighting in the process of drawing attention to its typography.
I've discovered quite a few beautiful websites this way and then gone on to discover the interesting things on those websites. I should definitely write more about these pleasant detours but let's focus on what happened last night for the nonce. I opened this week's newsletter from The League of Movable Type and it came with its usual set of interesting links. One of these lead me to The Pudding, a self-described digital publication focused on longform data journalism. They are frankly doing themselves a great disservice with such a dry description since the site just oozes personality and fun. Go take a look yourself [1]!
I was sent there to check out an article on the card game, Spades, and its place in the African American community [2]. The design of that piece most certainly blew me away and is what got me scrolling through the rest of the site. That's when I chanced upon one piece titled, "How Bad is Your Streaming Music?".
The title made me nervous. My sister often mocks me for my plain taste in music, which she claims never evolved beyond when I was 15. The most experimental I've gotten is checking out Spotify's global top lists. My music taste is something I've often been teased about by friends and so it's with some trepidation that I clicked on the link and granted it the necessary permissions to evaluate me, as represented by my taste.
The judgment arrived in under a minute and now I know just how much I — I mean, my taste in music — sucks. Why don't you go find out too [3]?
