A thunderstorm had been building all afternoon, moving in from the bay to the south-west. I'd check the forecast, looked at the weather radar, then decided that it would all go south of me and a ride up along Gardiners creek & the Anniversary trail would keep me away from the edges. Well half way around my ride I was hit by a wall of wind & debris, followed by gradually increasing rain that eased off just in time for the final stretch home through the park in steamy sunlight, ending up with me getting home drenched and covered in small insects.
With the wind and the approaching storm almost all the birds were sheltering; Noisy miners[1] and Rainbow lorikeets[2] still screeched from bushes & trees and a few magpies[3] were out and about, digging for worms and poking around on the ground, but nearly everything else had hidden away.
The exception was the "pigeon patch" of grass, that mysterious 2m diameter circle near Warrigal road in Markham reserve that had a dozen Crested pigeons[4] pecking around in it — I really must stop there one day and thoroughly investigate, I have no idea why there are always pigeons on that one patch, from the path it doesn't look as though there's anything different there or any seed put out for them.
