2021/1125/2030 — roosting

Walking home from the local shops on sundown there is a constant deafening screaming and chattering coming from the palm trees in the station car park. The row of palms are big and old, at least a metre through the trunk and with a massive crown of fronds. Every evening seemingly hundreds of Rainbow lorikeets[1] return from whereever they spend the day feeding and flying and roost deep in the centre of the trees. It's amazing to watch, as you walk nearby you can see pairs and small groups fly in screeching, land somewhere on one of the big fronds then clamber their way in to the depths of the tree top and out of sight — screeching all the while and occasionally dislodging other individuals who shoot out, fly a quick lap around and land back on the tree. I have no idea how many there are in there, it would make a fascinating timelapse video to see them arrive in the evening, gradually grow quiet as it gets dark, then wake and fly out in the mornings
