Eating lunch sitting on the front steps on a warm late spring day, humid from all the recent rains. The insect life is all around us, and last night the cicadas started up for their first propert night of calling, there'd been a few desultory squawks last week, but nothing like the chorus yesterday.
A tiny praying mantis stalked across Jo's foot, about 1.5cm long and showing up vividly green against her skin and then the red bricks on the ground. It was relocated to a nearby rose bush where hopefully it'll find some aphids for dinner.
A Yellow admiral[1] shot past, speed in proportion to the warmth I guess, darting around the mock-orange bush but finding no blossom out yet and vanished over the fence. One or two Cabbage white[2] butterflies floated around some of the white roses at a far more sedate pace until they too dissappeared
Flies, an earwig, lots of snail trails and nibbled leaves around some newly planted sage, and pill-bugs scuttling around
