2021/1102/1400 — tree of life

While sitting in the back garden with my lunch I spent around half an hour watching birds darting in and out of the enormous bay tree. It's huge, and impenetrably dense, so we've no real idea what lives in there. Today it was a small flock of Brown thornbills[1] pecking their way around chasing insects in the warm still afternoon. At least I'm 99% sure that they're Brown thornbills, definitely one of the thornbills and what I can see and hear matches what I read in the bird book. Occasionaly one of them would dart out into the open air to snatch an insect on the wing, then return to the safety of the branches. Soft cooing from up in the branches tells me that the doves are still there — Spotted doves[2] — possibly with a nest, although I haven't spotted one this year.

The oddest observation today was shortly after I'd come back inside, Jo was sitting in the garden reading the paper and saw that the cat had suddenly dropped to her belly and started stalking something across the grass, turning around she saw that a baby — or at least only half-grown — Ringtail possum had fallen out of the tree and was lying on the grass underneath. Chased the cat away and watched as the possum climbed clumsily back up the tree to about 3m height, one leg dragging at its side and not moving, although whether the injured leg was the cause or a result of the fall we don't know
