2021/1008/1700 — a frog

I've been struggling making time to write these up — I think of a topic during the day while I'm out and about, but then by the time I get home the late afternoon and evening disappears in a whirl of domesticity. Maybe its time to catch up again

A sunny afternoon today, out for a my daily bike ride past Gardiners creek, up the Anniversary trail and down Ferndale track back to Gardiners creek at the Glen Iris wetlands. Rainbow lorikeets[1] and noisy miner[2] calling loudly all the way down Ferndale track, but mostly not visible in tree-tops and bushes. Down to the wetlands and stop to look around in the ponds and reeds; magpies[3] calling from the treetops, Dusky moorhen[4] and a little grebe[5] paddling around and feeding, but no sign of the turtle yet this spring.

Around to next pond and the bird hide; common myna[6], black duck[7] and grey teal[8]. It always amuses me that I seem to see more birds at the first pond that doesn't have the bird hide than at the second one that does. Then around the pond on the far side of the ti-tree thickets and over the boardwalk-bridge. Pock! Pock! The frogs are calling loudly and I stop at the council information boards and push the button until I hear the right sound. Aha, "Pock" is the Striped Marsh frog[9]
