Family outing today, down south to Braeside park and then a ride around and through the park to visit the wetlands and the bird watching spots.
While standing in the bird hide and looking around and pointing out to each other the black duck[1], the wood duck[2] — one of each — pairs of Chestnut teal[3] and Grey teal[4] — the last two almost under our feet — something new appeared. There were a couple of unfamiliar looking birds paddling towards us and the following conversation took place. “What's that duck with the blue bill?” “I think it's a Blue-billed duck.” “Don't be silly, you just made that up!” “Um, no, I think that's what its called, I think there really is a Blue-billed duck” Indeed it was, a check on wikipedia and a first for me, nd being breeding season, the blue bill of the Blue-billed duck[5] was very noticeable.
