2021/0822/1500 — nesting

The Sunday afternoon longer ride, sunny and windy almost the same as a week ago, and a very similar route up along the Anniversary trail and down the Ferndale track to the Glen Iris wetlands. Some magpies[1] here and there on lawns warbling too each other and eyeing off the opposition — other birds & humans, that soon in nesting season will become the enemies to be swooped on and driven off. Rainbow lorikeets[2] shrieking from up in the flowering gums. I spent some time standing by the lowest of the Glen Iris ponds, watching half a dozen moorhens[3] chase each other about, preliminary pairing up, fighting for territory, nesting or just driving off last year's brood... I'm not sure, but it certainly was noisy and splashy, honking, shrieking and splashing around chasing each other, now pairing up this way, now all ganging up on one individual. The water suprisingly clear, lots of gambusia fish to be seen swimming around, but no sign of the big turtle yet, if indeed it is still living in this pond and hasn't moved on
