2021/0701/1700 — wimmera driving

A day spent driving around places west of Horsham, lots of flat farmland and the painted silos that we'd come to see. We circled around the Little Desert National Park and called in to two places for short bushwalks and to explore. Noticeable birds while driving were the little Nankeen kestrels[1], there seemed to be one every couple of kilometres, hovering on fast beating wings or swooping down into the grass. A few other larger raptors but they're mostly a mystery to me, I can never seem to ID them with any success...

The first of our walks in the Little Desert park was at the Keith Hately Nature walk, one of the places where the Lowan[2] lives & nests, and although we saw the nesting mound, sadly we didn't see any Lowan. I got excited for a while when I saw some large bird tracks, but on closer examination we decided they were made by Emu[3], promptly confirmed by the presence of large emu poo sitting in the middle of the path!

Second walk was nearby from the Kiata campground, and after a longish day in the car we chose the shortest walk — the Red Gum loop — but even so saw plenty of wildlife and enjoyed the near complete silence being so far from any roads or other people. A few kangaroo[4] out in the open grassland and a Swamp wallaby[5] watched us as we passed through an area of ti-tree. At one point I heard the characteristic deep drumming sound of an emu[3], then a few seconds later spotted a pair stalking off into the bush. Overhead lots of smaller birds, mostly a mystery bag of honeyeaters and a few woodswallows, perhaps one day I'll get better at IDing them.
