Out of the house before 6am to get to Little River for a bike ride through the Brisbane Ranges, a day of riding and a fair bit of casual wildlife spotting. Somewhere early in the morning a fox[1] ran across the road, I later saw another two as roadkill... admittedly I saw a fair bit of everything as roadkill. A mob of kangaroos[2] in a paddock bounded away as they spotted me, far too many of them were dead in various states of decomposition along the roads. Several times a flash of scarlet at the roadside as either one or a pair of Scarlet robins[3] flew away, equally small and colourful were some small to medium sized flocks of goldfinches[4]
Surprisingly, the hilight of the day would be at around 4pm as I got home and was unpacking bike and gear from the car, we looked up as three Yellow-tailed black cockatoos[5] flew low over the house with their characteristic slow floppy wingbeats, vanishing into a neighbour's conifer, presumably to feast on whatever pine cones it has at the moment.
