2020/1204/1730 — garden fruit

Chomp chomp chomp, crack crack crack. Oh so quietly a flock of twelve very large Sulphur-crested cockatoos[1] has descended into our plum tree and are gorging themselves on the kernels. They're not interested in the fruit itself, which is still unripe, but they very carefully snip off each plum, rip them open to get the stone out, then crack the stone in half to eat the seed kernel. Quite amazing to watch and amusing to see what are normally raucously noisy birds silently eating, only calling out if they think we're coming outside to chase them away. The fallen fruit is then picked over by blackbirds[2] and mynas[3], while in the tree a few thornbills poke around at the carefully selected ripest pieces -- I'm not sure whether they're going for the ripe fruit or the insects on it.
