Back at home, one of many minor variations of my daily bike ride. Alongside Gardiners creek in Ashburton just downstream of Warrigal road there's a grassy patch where nearly every time I'm there I see a small flock of Crested pigeons[1]. Around a dozen there today, scratching in the dust and eating the grass seeds -- a clap-clap-clap from their wings as one or two are startled and fly off overhead. Recent arrivals in Melbourne, according to the bird books they're an inhabitant of places further inland, but they moved south and east during the Federation drought seeking better pasture and now that they're here they've settled in.
