For family reasons we had to drive out to Warragul for half the day, over an hour out along the freeway there and the same back and I sat and looked at the endless housing developments creeping across the farmland, joining up the West Gippsland villages as Jo drove. From the car window the usual suspects of open farmland and freeway roadside; Little ravens[1], European starlings[2], Common myna[3], Magpies[4], Mudlarks[5] and three types of cockatoos; Galah[6], Sulphur-crested[7] and Little corella[8]. Then while at a gathering in the park in town a fourth cockatoo flew over calling, unmistakable sound of a Yellow-tailed black cockatoo[9], but hidden by trees and gazebo roof and never in sight.
That would have been my wildlife for the day but later on after we got home I went out for a late bike ride, up the Anniversary trail and down Ferndale track and to the Glen Iris wetlands where I was surprised by a very close encounter with a Nankeen night-heron[10] as it flapped clumsily overhead trying to escape persecution by Willy wagtails[11] and Red wattlebirds[12], then as I rode around the ponds a Reed warbler[13] shot out of the undergrowth and perched both nearby and in plain sight for almost a minute before flitting away -- finally letting me get a decent look at one. Completing my loop around the pond I arrived back at the bridge over Gardiners creek and saw[14] that the night-heron was settled in at the waters edge, now safe from harrassment. The Willy wagtail nest is now empty, I'm hoping that they've fledged and not been eaten
