I keep meaning to write stuff on my gemlog or record a gemcast about something, but usually the ideas will briefly flash through my mind, and I will think, "Yeah, that'll be great!" Then I do nothing.
Anyhow, today while scrolling through my feed, I see yet another post about the so-called Metaverse. The thing I don't understand, is how anyone, whether it's society or the journalistic community, could get so hyped up over some crap that is so mundane. Like, seriously, the big upcoming revolution in tech is just virtual avatars? As if we didn't have these twenty years ago, or thirty years ago. It feels completely fake and stupid.
Maybe everyone is just bored and this sounds like fun, and maybe the pandemic had something to do with it, but in any case I think there isn't enough recognition of the fact that this whole Metaverse story is meaningless fluff, and nobody really cares about VR. At least, I don't care about it. Maybe there are people who do; I don't know.
Seems like people are all too quick to forget that Facebook's rebrand to Meta was only a cheap ploy to distract from the fact that it's perhaps the most hated company in tech, and that it's guilty of so many abuses.
