Timeout update

BeerW0lf | 2021-05-06

Just chiming in.

I’m still here. Still relatively sane.

Work

I’ve been thinking about my work routine and found a new perspective to handle my work load. It has helped a lot. I feel like I manage to get more things done with less despair than before. This involves a few tools and methods, but I guess I’ll make a separate gemlog about those, when I get them honed to perfection.

Play

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Well… I’m trying to avoid going full blown Shining rampage. So here’s how I’ve spent my idle time as of late.

Books

I remember reading cyberpunk years back and liking the whole theme. Back in the day I remember reading a bunch of William Gibson, Philip K. Dick and Neal Stephenson. So I thought to start a few books I’ve missed. Currently on my reading list is Neal Stephenson’s Diamond Age.

I also read Sid Meier’s autobiography: “Sid Meier's Memoir!: A Life in Computer Games by Sid Meier”. It was pretty good, but then again I’ve always liked Sid’s games.

Series

Star Trek: Picard

I watched the whole Picard series. It was ok I guess. However, it really didn’t have the Star Trek vibe to it. Sure, it had some familiar cast, but it could have easily been any other generic scifi series.

The Boys

Now there’s an interesting series. I haven’t watched very many of the episodes yet, but so far, it has been really refreshing take on the super hero genre.

X-files!

There’s fucking all seasons of X-files on Amazon prime? And the quality is way better than I remember from the distant past of CRT & VHS. I just might need to watch them all over again…

No. You don’t get a link for X-files. Its fucking X-files!

Games

Disco Elysium

I picked this up after they released the “final cut” update. I have about 11h clocked in game. Oh wow! This game… This is the best RPG I’ve played since Fallout 2, Torment and Baldur’s Gate. This is on another level. One thing that makes this kinda unique in the whole CRPG genre is the lack of combat. There is none. At least not the strategic kind, where you count hit points and such. All interaction between the characters is done by dialog. And there is a wall of text. The story and characters are immersive. Its like reading a book, where you live inside the main characters head and make all the decisions. I highly recommend this.

There is no native Linux version available, but this worked out-of-the-box by Steam’s Proton layer, that’s on Ubuntu 20.04 and Nvidia GPU. I honestly can’t remember the GPU’s model. Its been years since I build that thing, and I can’t be arsed to check (writing this on my laptop).

Civilization VI Gathering Storm

I got the DLC a while back, but only now I managed to get a proper game going. I think I’m on a fairly regular sized game with normal speed and randomized tech tree. Round 200+ I think. I’m playing Canada and have had troubles with Zulu attacking my allied neighbor Kongo.

The new “free city” mechanics are cool. I build one of my cities too far with few available amenities. Zulu was too close, so the city rebelled on me and joined the Zulu. I got that sorted out later, when I was able to announce war on them, after they had attacked my ally. However, I couldn’t take the city by force. During the war I managed to pillage all the city's surrounding districts. During peace time the citizens grew angry at their Zulu overlords and began rebelling again. My planted spy in the city helped the rebellion along, and before too long, the city joined the great Canadian empire once again.

There’s also the new World congress, where other nations vote on pressing matters and you can sway the results with “diplomacy currency”. The whole Civ series have come a long way. I’m curious if they can keep inventing new mechanics for coming years and still keep the game fun to play.

Azul

This is a board game. I picked this up few weeks back. The family has been playing this and really liking it. Not too complex, but still far from a random change game.

Sudoku

Yes? You know… something to do during coffee breaks.

No. No link you silly reader, you got this!

Outside activities

There were a few warm spring days already and I managed to get my fishing gear out of storage. I got a new jig fishing rod last summer and I’m planning to get more fishing done this summer. Didn’t catch anything last time, tho.

The family went on a geocaching run too. That was fun. I guess we’ll integrate that to our holiday plans this summer. Lots of camping and such.
