The Game Sent By God

John Yianni, designer of the hex tile game Hive, says in [an interview]:

I truly believe the idea for Hive was God given, Jesus’ way of blessing me and my family and providing for us, and giving us a hope and a future. Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

That’s nice. As long as you don’t affirm the disjunct. What I mean by that is that if someone is messed up and dying in the gutter, I’m pretty sure that’s not their fault, and specifically I don’t think it’s “because they didn’t love God enough.”

Now, to be clear, I am not saying Yianni is affirming that disjunct. I don’t know anything about his beliefs or politics, this interview was the first time I ever heard anything about him or the history of Hive (which is a good game).

His remark just reminded me of the horrors of prosperity theology, which I’m not onboard with.

Again, nothing wrong with being grateful for being blessed. I just prefer being really clear about this stuff. In their own book, for whatever it’s worth, the lamb identifies with prisoners and the wretched. Job is basically living on ash and sand.
