Video Game Log

I'm planning to keep track of the games I'm playing here. This page is a work in progress.

Elden Ring

Release date: 2022

Console: PC (Steam)

Post date: 2022.04.26 Tuesday

Long time, no post. Finished Elden Ring (three times, lol). Maybe it's just recency bias, but it may be my favorite game? It's everything I loved about the Dark Souls trilogy with just less friction. It's an extremely generous game that has somehow managed to keep my attention for 130+ hours. I even went out of my way to grab all of the achievements, which isn't something I really do. Quite an achievement!

My first play through was a strength build, two-handing a Greatsword. My second, more streamlined runthrough was sorcery. And my third and final (for now) run was dual-weilding whips with a dex/arcane focus. Sorcery has its place, but melee is so much more engaging to me. And the whips are so much fun! Probably my favorite loadout in any souls game, so far.

I'll eventually start a new character and get in a comfortable place to wait for the DLC. But for now, I'm just hanging out at the Raya Lucaria gate doing PVP. My character is named Flaya, so keep an eye out if you stop by.

Elden Ring

Release date: 2022

Console: PC (Steam)

Post date: 2022.03.15 Tuesday

I played Elden Ring for the first time last night. Only a couple hours in, but it’s made a great first impression. Still feels a lot like Dark Souls, but the new verbs and the open-world setting make it also feel incredibly different. Jumping over stuff is a game changer. Running away from a horde of giants on a horse? Stealth?? Really great stuff.

My character is a ripoff of Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones and is tentatively a strength build. I didn’t spend too long in the character creation screen because I was eager to get into the game, but she looks great and badass. And I’ve already found a greatsword, so we’re on the right track.

BallisticNG

Released: 2016

Console: PC (Steam)

This game kicks ass. I'm a big fan of the first three Wipeout games and this is basically just more of that. And it appears to be developed by just two people as a total labor of love. I've only dipped my toe in, but it seems like an extremely generous game — well worth the $8. Looks and feels just like the classics, but with a ton of mod support. I added a bunch of music (including a lot of tracks from the original Wipeout games), and it's just extremely good. (I still kinda suck at these games, though.)

Resident Evil 2

Released: 1998

Console: PS1 (via Duckstation)

Last night I finished a playthrough of the Claire A scenario of RE2. This is one of my favorite games of all time, but it had been several years since I've played it. I'm amazed at how well it holds up. Incredible atmosphere and still convincingly tense. Even though i ended the playthrough with lots of extra ammo and healing items, I felt like I was barely scraping by the entire time. Really impressive how well this game keeps the tension high even when you're pretty well stocked.

One of the reasons it works so well is how random the enemy behavior feels. You never know exactly how many shots it's going to take to down an enemy. You never know if you'll manage to sneak past a licker or cerberus without being spotted. It's great and feels very unique in gaming. Other games have randomness, sure, but nothing else feels quite like trying to zig zag through a hallway of zombies in a classic RE game.

The campaign length is also perfect for a horror game. I finished in about four hours, playing about an hour each night. Long enough for a tense adventure, without wearing out its welcome or becoming too comfortable. A great game!
