Briain Kelly, 28 Apr

Locals and visitors to Portumna may get some unique fun on the water this summer, with plans for a floating water park on Lough Derg.

West Lake Aqua Park is seeking approval from the county council for an adventure facility consisting of an inflatable floating obstacle course.

This would be located approximately 73m offshore on the lake, and linked to the land via a floating pontoon.

"West Lake Aqua Park is an infl atable aqua park over water with interchangeable features of varying difficulty levels to keep customers of all ages from six upwards entertained," documents with the planning application state.

Whether alone or in a group, climbing, sliding, jumping, rolling and running along the course, customers are sure to have a memorable experience."

"Under the watchful eye of our lifeguards on duty, customers work their way along the course with a session typically lasting an hour."

The park would be located at the Portumna swimming area. Other than the inflatable course, the developer also plans to install a visitor check in, and changing area.

The park will operate from May through to September, running at weekends in May, June, and September, and seven days a week during the height of the summer.

According to the application, its expected that the water park will support approximately 25 jobs when running.

Letters of support for the plans from Portumna Chamber of Commerce and Waterways Ireland have been submitted with the application.

Both groups said that they believe this water park will be a valuable addition to the tourism offering in Portumna.

Galway County Council is due to make a decision on the planning application by West Lake Aqua Park by June 1 of this year.
